The waterproofing industry is growing at the rate of 20 per cent, and the fresh demand is being generated by emerging countries such as India and China. Praveen Sharma, DGM, STP Limited tells us about the emergence of new market applications
What changes has the waterproofing industry been witnessing for the past few years?
As India is emerging as a leading manufacturing centre for many MNCs, the sector is growing rapidly fast, and the demand growth is also increasing through new technologies for the construction industry. Government guidelines are very helpful for the organized - waterproofing sector to promote more eco-friendly products for current industry. By the emergence of new market applications that result from changing substrates and evolving assembly processes. A significant portion of new demand is being generated by emerging economies such as India and China. The market for water proofing chemicals is growing at the rate of 20 per cent, with significant variations between the regions. Historically, the industry was dominated by a few industrialized countries. Now, a significant portion of new demand is being generated by emerging economies such as India and China. Market fragmentation continues as new demand is generated from a supply and demand standpoint. As India is emerging as a leading manufacturing centre for a number of multinationals, the sector is growing fast, and the demand growth is also supported by the emergence of new market applications that result from changing substrates and evolving assembly processes. On the supply side, despite ongoing industry consolidation and M&A activities at the level of the multinational companies, new small- and medium sized companies are beginning to serve targeted market niches or specialize in a specific state-of-the-art technology.
Many a times, we come across the dilemma whether damp proofing to be adopted or waterproofing materials to be used or both to be implemented. Can you explain these two technologies?
This waterproofing industry has many kinds of system to waterproof a building like bituminous products like Membranes, Adhesives, Putties, Sealants & primers which all are waterproofing products where we can also apply some chemical coating for waterproofing. Damp proofing & waterproofing are quite similar Applications but waterproofing industry have huge deft. Here we talk about the whole system like tar felting, bituminous membranes, coal tar products, damp proofing, coatings, sealants, anticorrosive and many more for all kinds of industrial & residential projects.
What is the role of knowledge and technology management in this industry?
Today, the all emerging manufacturers are using advanced technology as example the waterproofing system recommended is cementitious acrylic polymer-based flexible membrane water-proofing system. ACI Committee 515 defines waterproofing as a treatment of a surface or structure to prevent the passage of water under hydrostatic pressure. Membrane waterproofing consists of surrounding the entire structure with a continuous barrier. This is the best system available right now. This becomes part and parcel with the structure and is monolithic, without any joints. This has generally the same properties as the concrete on which it is applied. Further, the system claims to have chloride resistance, sulphate on resistance, good carbon-dioxide diffusion resistance coupled with waterproofing qualities and acts as a protective coating against concrete and rebar deterioration.
What are your offerings for the infrastructure sector?
